0058 – Japanese basics (N5-N3) – もう〜しました : Have already done

grammar

How can I say that I have already done something in Japanese?

Have already done

If you want to explain that you have already done something,

もう + verb (masu form) ました

mou XXX mashita

Have already done XXX

Is used.

For example,

もう朝ごはんを食べました

Mou asgohan wo tabe mashita

I’ve already eaten my breakfast.

How to ask if one has done something yet

To ask if one has already done something, we can use the same grammar pattern with a question marker:

もう + verb (masu form) ましたか

mou XXX mashita

Have you done XXX yet?

And to reply this question,

Yes:

はい、もう+ verb (masu form) ました

hai mou XXX mashita

Yes, I have already done XXX

No:

いいえ、まだです

iie mada desu

No, not yet.

So for example,

A:

今日、もう日本語を勉強しましたか

kyou mou nihongo wo benkyou shi mashita ka

Have you already studied Japanese today?

B:

はい、もうしました。

hai mou shi mashita

Yes, I have.

C:

いいえ、まだです。

iie mada desu

No, not yet.

You can add

これから+ verb (masu form)

korekara

For saying that you’ll do it from now.

A:

今日、もう日本語を勉強しましたか

kyou mou nihongo wo benkyou shi mashita ka

Have you already studied Japanese today?

C: いいえ、まだです。これからします

iie mada desu. korekara shi masu

No, not yet. I’ll do it from now.
