0017 : Japanese basics (N5-N3) – も : too, also, as well

grammar

How do we say “too, also and as well” in Japanese?

Particle も (mo)

When you want to say that something is the same.

A particle (mo) is used in Japanese.

You need toadd (mo) to the noun to which the nuance of the same is applied.

For example,

A :

わたしは20歳です。

Watashi wa hatachi desu.

I’m 20 years old.

B :

わたし20歳です。

Watashi mo hatachi desu.

I’m also 20 years old.

Short pattern

Just like in English where we can say shortly

me too

you too

you can also say in Japanese like

わたしです。

watashi mo desu.

Me too.

あなたです。

anata mo desu.

You too.

*NOTE : Be careful with the use of あなた. It sounds rude in some cases (*How to address someone by name)

And although in English we say “So is he (her, Mike).” instead of “Him (her, Mike) too”, we can use the same pattern Noun + も (mo) like

です。

kare mo desu.

So is he.

彼女です。

kanojo mo desu.

So is her.

マイクさんです。

Maiku san mo desu.

So is Mike.

*NOTE : This rule also applies to “So does he (she, Mike)”.
