0091- Japanese basics (N5-N3) – Something (Someone, somewhere etc)

grammar

How can I say in Japanese “I’d like to do something this weekend”?

Ambiguous words

When we want to use ambiguous words such as something(someone, somewhere and etc),

Question word + か

is a way to go.

For example, we can make like this:

  • Who : 誰 : dare + か: ka →誰か: dareka: someone
  • What : 何 : nani + か: ka →何か: nanika: something
  • Where : どこ: doko + か: ka →どこか: dokoka: somewhere

And with what we have just created, we can say

週末、何かしたいです。

Syuumatsu, nanika shitai desu.

I’d like to do something this weekend

To do

する: suru

します: shi masu

Do we need particles?

When we use “something” words, it requires

  • Colloquial & general: no particles
  • Emphasis: original particles

Thus, a same phrase can be uttered by

Colloquial & general:

何か食べますか。

Nanika tabe masu ka.

Do you eat something?

Emphasis:

何か食べますか。

Nanika wo tabe masu ka.

Do you eat something?
