How do we talk about our companions in Japanese?

 

と : companion

 

When we talk about whom we do something with, 

 

companion + と (to)

 

is typcally used. 

 

For example, 

 

弟と学校へ行きます。

otouto to gakkou e iki masu.

I go to school with my younger brother.

 

母とうちに帰りました。

haha to uchi ni kaeri mashita.

I returned home with my mother.

 

How to ask about the companion?

 

When we ask about the companion, 

 

誰と

dare to

with whom

 

is used.

 

For example, 

 

A :

誰と学校へ行きますか。

dare to gakkou e iki masu ka.

Who do you go to school with?

 

B :

弟と行きます。

otouto to iki masu.

With my younger brother.

 

A :

誰とうちに帰りましたか。

dare to uchi ni kaeri masu ka.

Who did you return home with?

 

B :

母と帰りました。

haha to kaeri masshita.

With my mother.
