How do I say “and” in Japanese?
と (particle to juxtapose nouns)
When you want to combine nouns that have the same value (not superior or inferior to each other, but just to put them next to each other),
と
to
and
is used, as such :
わたしとケビンはアメリカ人です。
watashi to kebin wa america-jin desu.
Me and Kevin are Americans.
水曜日と金曜日は休みです。
suiyoubi to kinyoubi wa yasumi desu.
Wednesday and Friday are closed.
A word of caution
Many Japanese learners make the same mistake.
WITH と, WE CAN NOT JUXTAPOSE :
- VERBS
- ADVERBS
- ADJECTIVES
These elements require a different manipulation to juxtapose (We will learn about it in a different lessons).
