0084 – Japanese basics (N5-N3) – Comparative 1

JLPT N3-N5

How can I ask in Japanese “Today is hotter than yesterday” ?

Basic comparative

When we compare two things and want to say that one of them is better, hotter, worse, etc,

Noun 1 + + Noun 2 +より + Adjective

Noun 1 + wa + Noun 2 + yori + Adjective

  • Noun 2 is the object compared with Noun 1

is typically used.

So see the steps below.

今日暑いです。

Kyoo wa atsui desu.

Today is hot.

今日昨日より暑いです。

Kyoo wa kinoo yori atsui desu.

Today is hotter than yesterday.

Here, the basic meaning of the phrases above is “Today is hot.”

But it becomes a comparative phrase by adding 昨日より (kinoo yori: than yesterday).

Intensifying the Comparative

We can straighten the comparative phrase by adding

ずっと

Zutto

Far more

*Place before the adjective.

So for instance,

今日は昨日よりずっと暑いです。

Kyoo wa kinoo yori atsui desu.

Today is hotter than yesterday.
