How can I say in Japanese that I go to the cinema once a week?
Frequency in Japanese
When talking about frequency, just like other languages, we need:
- Times
- Interval
And the grammar pattern
Specified interval + に + times
is typically used in Japanese.
For example,
1週間に1回映画館へ行きます。
i ssyuukan ni i kkai eigakan e iki masu.
I go to the cinema once a week.
Times
When talking about times,
回 (kai)
Is used as being combined with numbers.
Here is the list of times in Japanese.
Watch out:
When 回 (kai) is combined with
- 1
- 6
- 8
- 10
Its reading becomes KKAI like
1回: i kkai
6回: ro kkai
8回: ha kkai
10回: ju kkai
*Also, pay attention to the sound change of the numbers.
Interval
Here’s something special to know before looking for the intervals.
- 間: kan: period
- Hour and Week need 間
- Interval (day) : Same as how we say the date on the calendar EXCEPT 1日(ichi nichi: one day)
- Interval (hour) : Same as how we say Time (and add 間(kan)) in Japanese (see also: aaaaaaaaaa)
- Interval (week): 1(8, 10) week(s) require 週間 to be read as ssyuukan (and not syuukan)
- Interval (month)1: 1(6,8,10) month(s) require か月 to be read as kkagetsu (and not kagetsu)
- Interval (month)2: 6か月: ro kkagetsu: 6 months can be also said 半年: hantoshi: half a year
- Interval (year): Same as how we say Year (see also: )
And here are the lists of intervals.

1時間に3回トイレへ行きました。
Ichi jikan ni san kai toire e iki mashita.
I went to the restroom three times in one hour.

3日に1回学校へ行きます。
