grammar

How can I use two adjectives easily in Japanese?

Enumerate two same values

The easiest way to use two adjectives which have the same value:

  • Good + Good
  • Bad + Bad

a connecter word:

そして

soshite

and

is typically used.

For example,

田中さんはハンサムです。そして親切です。

Tanaka san wa hansamu desu. soshite shinsetsu desu.

Tanaka-san is handsome and kind.

最近のスマホは高いです。そして便利じゃないです。

saikin no sumaho wa takai desu. soshite benri janai desu.

Recent smartphones are expensive and not useful.

Enumerate two different values

Sometimes, we’d like to send opposite information in one sentence.

In such case, the different values are typically like:

  • Good + Bad
  • Bad + Good

and we can use the following grammar pattern:

phrase final + が (ga)、

For example,

寿司は美味しいです、高いです。

sushi ga oisihi desu ga, takai desu.

Sushi is delicious but expensive.

日本語は難しいですが、おもしろいです。

nihongo wa muzukashii desu ga, omoshiroi desu.

Japanese is difficult but interesting.

This grammar pattern is not for only adjective phrases:

学校へ来ましたが、休みでした。

gakkou e ki mashita ga, yasumi deshita.

I came to school but it was a holiday.
