0023 : Japanese basics (N5-N3) – の : Content

grammar

How can I ask a question about the content of something?

How to ask about the content of something?

In Japanese, the grammar pattern

何のX

nan no X

is used to ask about the content of something.

For example,

それは何の漫画ですか。

sore wa nan no manga desu ka.

What manag is it about?

これは何の映画ですか。

kore wa nan no eiga desu ka.

What film is this about?

Content

Just like the question asking about the content of something, we can use の to explain the context.

X (content)Y(object)

X no Y

Y of X

For example,

これはチョコレートお菓子です。

kore wa chokoreeto no okashi desu.

This is a chocolate candy.

This example shows that a content can also be things that are in something.

How to answer

When being asked about the content, you can only give the necessary information.

The other elements of the sentence can be omitted.

For example,

A :

それは何の漫画ですか。

sore wa nan no manga desu ka.

What manga is that about?

サッカー漫画です。

sakkaa no manga desu.

This is a manga about football.

or

これはサッカー漫画です。

kore wa sakkaa no manga desu.

This is a manga about football.

A :

これは何の映画ですか。

kore wa nan no eiga desu ka.

What film is it?

B :

アニメ映画です。

anime no eiga desu.

This is an anime film.

Note : Here, the genre or the content (for example, anime hitstory) of the film is asked and answered.
